Microaggressions often take the form of seemingly casual comments, questions, assumptions or behaviours. Although they can be difficult to recognize, their cumulative effects can significantly shape experiences of belonging, recognition and participation in academia.
In a public talk on 20 October and an in-depth workshop on 21 October, clinical psychologist and researcher Dr. Gina Sissoko (Yale School of Public Health and City University of New York) will explore how microaggressions arise in academic environments, how power relations and institutional structures shape their impact, and why the responses of colleagues, supervisors and bystanders matter.
Combining psychological research, real-world examples and interactive exercises, the two events will examine the distinction between intention and impact, the challenges of recognizing and addressing microaggressions, and practical ways to respond constructively and support those affected. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on different perspectives, practise concrete strategies for intervention, and consider how to foster a more inclusive and respectful academic culture.
The public talk offers an accessible introduction to the topic and is open to all interested university members. It will take place on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, from 6–7 pm at the Kirchhoff-Institut für Physik (KIP), Hörsaal 2, Im Neuenheimer Feld 227, Heidelberg. No prior registration is required. An informal get-together with snacks and drinks will follow.
The in-depth workshop on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, from 9 am–5 pm builds on the talk and provides space for deeper reflection and practical application. It will take place at the Seminarzentrum Campus Bergheim, Bergheimer Straße 58a, Heidelberg. The workshop is particularly relevant for doctoral researchers, postdocs, academic and teaching staff, supervisors, coordinators, DEI and equality teams, and people in leadership roles. Places are limited; prior registration is required via sfb1225@thphys.uni-heidelberg.de.
The events are organised by CRC 1225 ISOQUANT in collaboration with UNIFY – Unit for Family, Diversity & Equality.
