6.2.2026
Each year, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science draws attention to the visibility, recognition, and working conditions of women in research. At the Department of Physics and Astronomy, this occasion is marked by an evening that combines the stories about two inspiring female scientists, and a very special movie screening.
The program opens with student talks on the scientific contributions and career paths of Nergis Mavalvala and Young-Kee Kim — two physicists whose work has shaped modern gravitational-wave and particle physics, and whose careers also highlight broader questions of representation and leadership in science.
After a networking and discussion break, the documentary Picture a Scientist will be screened. The film offers a candid look at structural barriers in academia and the lived experiences of women scientists, inviting reflection on how research cultures are shaped — and how they might change.
The event takes place on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, starting at 17:00, in HS 2, Kirchhoff Institute for Physics. The event language is English; no prior registration is required.
The evening is organized by the Meet&Mingle@ISOQUANT team.
