Stalagmites and Climate Dynamics in Europe

Dynamic processes in atmospheric circulation such as the North Atlantic Jet Stream have an influence on regional changes in precipitation. This is shown by studies on precipitation patterns in eastern Central Europe since the end of the last ice age, carried out by an international research team led by Sophie Warken from the Institute of Environmental Physics. The scientists analyzed dripstones from the Romanian Clo?ani Cave, which, as a natural climate archive, allow conclusions to be drawn about precipitation variability over a period of around 20,000 years. According to Dr. Warken, the new findings on the dynamics of the climate in Europe could help to improve current climate models and predict the probability of extreme weather events more accurately.
