The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy mourns the loss of
Professor Dr. Bogdan Povh
who passed away on February 14, 2024 at the age of 91.
Bogdan Povh was appointed professor at Heidelberg University in 1965 and played a decisive role in shaping the Heidelberg research landscape. He established new research directions through the innovative use of of the accelerator facilities at CERN. He gained international renown through the development of new methods for the investigation of so-called hyper-nuclear states, for which he received the highest award of the German Physical Society. Even after his move to the directorate of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics until his retirement in 2000, he continued his research. He remained closely associated with the university and academic teaching. With his textbook on nuclear and particle physics, he left behind a standard work that has influenced generations of students. The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy will honor Bogdan Povh's memory.
