The faculty of physics and astronomy in Heidelberg awards the 2023 WE Heraeus dissertation prize to Laura Olivera Nieto. Laura works in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics, and she combined in her thesis work data from the H.E.S.S. telescopes in Namibia with data from the HAWC detector in Mexico. In this way, she achieved a wide energy coverage in an observation of the micro quasar SS433, shedding light onto the physics of jet formation and the associated non-thermal particle acceleration processes inside SS433. The chair of the jury, Prof. Tilman Plehn, handed over the prize to Dr. Olivera Nieto on the 26th January, 2024, and the faculty congratulates Laura for her fantastic achievement.
