ANALOGUE GRAVITY: A PRIMER

Analogue gravity is a research program that investigates analogues of general relativistic gravitational fields in diverse physical systems, particularly — but not exclusively — in condensed matter systems. Its goal is to provide new insights into related challenges, especially in classical and quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. With a rich history dating back to the early years of general relativity, analogue gravity has emerged as a fruitful approach to exploring fundamental physics. The future of this program is now driven by rapid experimental advances and the theoretical potential for analogue models to inspire innovative solutions to the challenge of merging gravitational and quantum realms. These lectures will explore the history, objectives, key results, and future directions of analogue gravity, contextualising its relevance to open issues in modern gravitational theory and highlighting its lessons for fundamental physics.
