FROM PARTICLES TO PROGRAMS: NAVIGATING THE LEAP FROM PHYSICS TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Marc Schuh, Thomas Hugle

TNG Technology Consulting GmbH
Monday, October 7th, 17:30

At latest when finishing one's PhD, the question arises of "What to do next?". Besides the option to continue the academic journey with a Post-Doc position, there are plenty of alternatives in industry as well, with working in the field of software development being a commonly chosen one. After finishing our PhDs at the Max Planck Institute für Kernphysik (MPIK) in 2019 and 2020, we both became Software Consultants at TNG Technology Consulting GmbH, where software development and solving (hard) IT problems is the center of our daily work.

In this talk we want to give insights into how we turned from experimental and theoretical physicist into Software Consultants, how software development is different between academia and industry, what criteria guided us in picking an employer in IT and some of the programming projects we have been involved with - hopefully showing that switching from physics to software development can be closer to a "next step" than a "giant leap". One project we want to take a deep dive into, is the canoe AI analyzer that helps world class athletes at the Olympiastützpunkt in Heidelberg to further optimize their technique with the support of AI.
