ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOLS AND CLOUDS IN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM

Ottmar Möhler, Larissa Lacher

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Afternoon

Cloudsstrongly influence the climate system and the global hydrological cycle, not only depending on atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, but to a significant degree also on processes related to atmospheric aerosols. These processes include the role of aerosols as nuclei to form both droplets and ice crystals in clouds. The latter also plays an important role for the initiation of precipitation, especially over continents. This course includes an introduction into the sources, types and abundance of atmospheric aerosols, the interaction of aerosol particles with the gas-phase, and basics of aerosol physics and nucleation processes. Some aspects of current research and infrastructure development as well as aerosol sampling and measurement methods will also be touched.
