EXPLORING THE INVISIBLE: A GUIDED DESCENT INTO BLACK HOLE INTERIORS

Black holes are regions of spacetime with a gravitational pull so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. This defining property makes black holes seem deceptively simple from outside, with all their external features being completely determined by three properties: mass, spin and electric charge. This external simplicity hardly gives signs of the complexity that is swept under the rug in black hole interiors, which exhibit some of the most challenging problems in gravitational physics: from the very breakdown of the known laws of physics that is indicated by the presence of spacetime singularities, to puzzling conundrums such as the unknown fate of the information falling inside. In this course, we will carry out a guided descent into black hole interiors, starting with a brief excursion of their predictable exteriors that will be followed by an in-depth exploration of their unruly interiors. The course will introduce the basic foundational aspects of general relativity and black hole physics that are required to achieve a safe and interesting descent.
