INTRODUCTION TO NUMERICAL RELATIVITY, OR HOW CAN I FIT MY SPACETIME IN A COMPUTER?

Alex Vañó Viñuales

University of the Balearic Islands
Nachmittags

This course will cover the basic ingredients of numerical relativity, the field that solves the Einstein equations of general relativity using numerical methods. We will start with the 3+1 decomposition of spacetime, and after deriving the ADM equations we will discuss well-posedness and hyperbolicity. We will continue with initial data including black holes and how the location of their apparent horizons is determined. Finally we will get an overview of relativistic hydrodynamics, how gravitational radiation is extracted from simulations and what some current open research lines in the field are.
