In this talk I will show you what led me from working on quantum gravity in academia to do optics research at Carl Zeiss SMT. I will let you zoom into our stimulating research environment, which is somewhat similar to academia but very different in a few key aspects. Of course my other focus will lie on the type of research I am working on in the illumination department.
