Rare event searches as search for neutrinoless double beta decay and search for direct interections of dark matter particles in a suitable targe require low background laboratories. The best solution is offered by laboratories locates underground below a high mountain. Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in the center of Italy are worldwide one of the most inspiring laboratories where this kind of experiments are performed. This year we offer the opportunity for female master or PhD students in our RTG to experience the work in the LNGS underground laboratories. The visit will include an introduction to the underground laboratory, the hystory and development over the year and clearly a safety course. Discussions with female researchers and students will allow for learning about aspects related to their personal experience of running experiments underground.
A few hours will be dedicated to the visit to the underground laboratories. We will have the possibility to stand in the front of very important experiment as the XENON and CRESST experiments searching for dark matter direct interactions as well GERDA and CUORE searching for neutrinoless double beta decay, BOREXINO measuring the flux of neutrinos produced in the Sun and many other experiments.
We will stay in L'Aquila. This will offer us the possibility to visit the Gran Sasso Science Institute, an international PhD school and a center for advanced studies in physics, mathematics, computer science and social sciences. In particular we will have the opportunity to meet Prof. Marica Branchesi who, thanks to her important contribution to the discovery of gravitational waves, was among the 10 most influencing persons worldwide in the Nature 2017 list.
